Virtual reality, or VR, replaces most of your view with a computer-generated environment that responds as you turn your head and move. A modern headset combines displays, lenses, motion tracking, audio, and one or more input methods. Some headsets run on their own; others need a game console or Windows PC.
If you are new to VR, start with three decisions: what you want to do, which software platform has it, and how much setup you will accept. Hardware specifications matter, but the right library, fit, play space, and comfort options usually matter more than one headline number.
What makes an experience virtual reality?
A VR system renders a separate view for each eye and updates those views as the headset tracks your motion. That stereoscopic view supplies depth; low-latency motion updates help the virtual scene remain stable as you look around. Spatial audio and tracked input can add direction and interaction.
The W3C’s WebXR specification describes immersive VR as content that receives exclusive access to an XR display and is not intended to be integrated with the user’s physical environment. That distinction separates VR from augmented reality, although video-passthrough headsets can switch between both styles of experience.
3DoF and 6DoF
Three degrees of freedom (3DoF) tracks rotation: looking left and right, tilting, and looking up or down. It does not track your position through the room.
Six degrees of freedom (6DoF) adds movement along three axes. The system can respond when you lean, crouch, step sideways, or move forward. The W3C uses these terms for XR tracking, and modern interactive headsets generally rely on 6DoF for the headset and controllers.
Presence is not the same as realism
Presence is the feeling that you are located inside and able to act within a virtual space. Photorealistic graphics are not required. Consistent scale, responsive tracking, believable audio, and predictable interaction can be more important than visual detail.
The three practical VR platform types

Phone-based viewers are historically important but are no longer the useful default category for buying advice. Current beginners are better served by a tracked standalone, console, or PC system.

What you can do in VR
Games and social spaces
VR games use head and hand tracking for aiming, movement, rhythm, puzzles, simulation, and social interaction. Before buying, confirm that the specific game supports your headset and preferred play style. A title available on one store is not automatically available on every VR platform.

Fitness and active play
Some applications turn arm movement, squatting, or full-body motion into exercise. They can be physically demanding, but an entertainment app is not a substitute for personalized medical or training advice. Clear the room, use wrist straps where supplied, and choose an intensity appropriate for you.
Learning, simulation, and visualization
VR can represent places, procedures, equipment, or 3D structures that are difficult to access directly. Whether it improves learning depends on the instructional design, the learner, the comparison method, and how outcomes are measured. Key terms without the marketing fog
- Field of view (FOV): the angular portion of the scene visible through the headset. Published methods differ, so numbers from different manufacturers may not be directly comparable.
- IPD: interpupillary distance, or the distance between the centers of your pupils. A suitable lens adjustment helps align the optical view.
- Inside-out tracking: cameras or sensors on the headset estimate its position and often track controllers.
- Outside-in tracking: external equipment observes or supports tracked devices; SteamVR base stations are a common example.
- Passthrough: camera views of the physical environment shown inside an opaque headset.
- Roomscale: an experience designed for movement within a defined play area.
- OpenXR: Khronos’s royalty-free API standard intended to reduce the work needed to support multiple AR and VR platforms. Support still depends on each runtime, device, and application.

What matters when choosing a headset
- Software: list the games or applications you care about and verify their platform support.
- Required hardware: account for a compatible PC, console, adapter, base stations, and ports.
- Optics and fit: lens type, IPD adjustment, glasses clearance, eye relief, and strap design affect daily use.
- Tracking and input: check whether the experience needs controllers, hand tracking, eye tracking, or external tracking.
- Play space: verify the supported seated, standing, or roomscale modes.
- Accessibility: investigate captions, control remapping, seated operation, one-handed use, color settings, and app-specific accommodations.
- Total cost: include required platform hardware and only the accessories that solve a demonstrated need.
- Return policy: comfort and optical fit are personal; a practical return route matters.
Your first hour in VR
Use the platform’s current setup instructions rather than an old generic video. Clear the floor, charge the equipment, install updates, pair the intended controllers, set the floor height and boundary, and adjust the headset before launching an intense experience.
Choose a stationary or comfort-rated introduction. Stop if you feel nausea, dizziness, eye discomfort, disorientation, or unusual fatigue. Meta’s developer guidance recommends experiences be designed around breaks and easy resumption; it does not promise that one schedule works for everyone.
