The HTC VIVE SteamVR Base Station 2.0 is an external tracking beacon for compatible SteamVR hardware. It is useful as a replacement or expansion unit for a known 2.0 setup, but it is not universal. Compatibility is the decision

“SteamVR” does not mean every SteamVR headset needs—or can use—this station. HTC lists VIVE Pro series and Cosmos Elite, plus the Cosmos external tracking faceplate. It excludes VIVE Controller 1.0, Tracker 1.0, and standard Cosmos controllers.

Valve Index hardware uses SteamVR Tracking 2.0, but buyers should confirm their complete system and regional package documentation. A base station also does not connect a standalone Quest to a PC.

Never mix station generations

HTC says older base stations and Base Station 2.0 are not compatible in one play area because they synchronize differently. Use one generation consistently. This corrects the costly assumption that one 2.0 station can extend a 1.0 pair.

Installation considerations

HTC advises secure mounting outside the play area, aimed toward its center and near power outlets. Opposite corners are the normal two-station arrangement. Do not move a powered station after room setup; repositioning can require recalibration.
